Training Program: A Superhero Film Universe-Inspired Animated Training Program for HR Leaders at HRdownloads

HRdownloads Inc. is a low-price competitor in the HRIS SaaS industry that needed to transform its training library. I created a six-episode superhero epic for HR leaders that is structured around the talent lifecycle.

Training Program: A Superhero Film Universe-Inspired Animated Training Program for HR Leaders at HRdownloads

HRdownloads Inc.

Problem Statement

As an HR firm, HRdownload's main customers they would sell to were HR leaders. VPs of HR, Chief People Officers, and Heads of Talent are some of the titles that our decision-makers would have. We did not, however, have much training to help HR leaders to be more effective themselves. Given our rebrand focused heavily on the idea of "loving what you do" as an HR leader, I thought it would be both prudent and smart to stress that we had a program to do exactly that.

Solution Implemented

I spoke with some prominent clients in our member base to gain some insight into how they see themselves in the world. I heard many themes come through, including firefighters, operating room doctors and even mafioso. The major (and far more positive) analogy that I heard consistently was a superhero.

HR folks need superpowers to deal with some of the business leaders. HR leaders not only need to be technologists now, but we need to know about microeconomics and psychology. HR generalists were celebrated when they simply found a new recruit who didn't quit after a month. The job was and is getting harder day by day. Couple that with the world moving more aggressively to a remote model and we had a recipe for a great training program.

Using that information, I crafted a program for HR leaders that would present them as both a superhero and sometimes also needing a superhero. Enter Captain HR - an average HR person given HR superpowers after working late one night scouring through resumes. You can check out how that happened in the clip below.

Each course is about 30-45 minutes long and uses the talent lifecycle as a model for program development.

The following is a list of courses created, with some sample clips, in the Mastering Remote HR Management Training Program featuring Captain HR. Full course descriptions with learning outcomes are available on my LinkedIn page under the projects section.

The Adventures of Captain HR: Mastering Remote HR Management for Performance Management

The Adventures of Captain HR: Mastering Remote HR Management for Talent Acquisition

The Adventures of Captain HR: Mastering Remote HR Management for Onboarding

The Adventures of Captain HR: Mastering Remote HR Management for Employee Engagement

The Adventures of Captain HR: Mastering Remote HR Management for Learning and Development

The Adventures of Captain HR: Mastering Remote HR Management for Offboarding

Each course would follow up with an exam that would test the learning content directly.

Results Achieved

Unfortunately, I left HRdownloads six months after publishing this program, so I only have those months of data to outline usage. The 6-month average per course totalled 1000 learners. Assuming that the growth of learners per month follows a similar trend to other courses, this program would have averaged approximately 2000 learners per year, slightly below the average for a new course of 2200 new annual learners.
