Training Program: A TV Mini-Series Inspired Animated Training Program for High-Potentials at HRdownloads

HRdownloads Inc. is a low-price competitor in the HRIS SaaS industry that needed to transform its training library. I created a seven-episode program for high-potentials that resembles a TV mini-series.

Training Program: A TV Mini-Series Inspired Animated Training Program for High-Potentials at HRdownloads

HRdownloads Inc.

Problem Statement

Shortly after starting at HRdownloads, I completed my first animated course about Respect in the Workplace, which was exceptionally well received. My CEO stopped checking in on my progress and, in Gen Z vernacular, allowed me to cook. I had a report run since the start of the company for all training courses. It became very apparent very quickly from our lifetime usage data - our clients were clamouring for leadership content for younger staff.

Solution Implemented

I proposed a program that would resemble a biopic mini-series that followed the life of a CEO from her upstart days out of college through her career and rise to CEO. Each course would act like an episode and maintain a three-act narrative structure. I would use the in media res storytelling device to grip learners early and keep them engaged by linking each course to a key event in the protagonist's career. For example, when the protagonist faces a terrible loss in her life, she must use good problem-solving skills to address the issue.

Below are select clips from each course. Full course descriptions with learning outcomes are available on my LinkedIn page under the projects section. The program consisted of 7 episodes and covered the following topics:

Leadership Essentials for High Potentials: Episode I - Becoming a Performance Coach

Leadership Essentials for High Potentials: Episode II - Building a High-Performance Team

Leadership Essentials for High Potentials: Episode III – Managing Transitions

Leadership Essentials for High Potentials: Episode IV – Making Structured Decisions

Leadership Essentials for High Potentials: Episode V – Creatively Solving Complex Problems

Leadership Essentials for High Potentials: Episode VI – Communicating Through Storytelling

Leadership Essentials for High Potentials: Episode VII – Building Trust to Unlock High Performance

Each 30-minute episode would still maintain its research and learning design rigour. Knowledge checks occur throughout the course, academic models are referenced with ways to use them, and rigorous exams administered post-episode would address the learning content directly to ensure skill transfer occurs.

Results Achieved

The program was very well received by the member base. For an average course, the number of assignments for the first year usually averages around 2200 for a non-compliance course. The average number of learners for the High-Potentials program was 5490 assignments per course. Still, most importantly, the standard deviation was 121 learners and dropped to 94 learners when removing the introduction from the data set. This indicated that learners who started the program finished the program.
